Language and Culture: Exploring the Multilingual World of V. & D. Povall

Image
Hello again, readers! This week we wanted to share more details on an aspect of our writing that is a bit... recherché .  It's our multilingualism.  (See what we did there?) (¿Ves lo que hicimos allí?) (Tu vois ce qu'on a fait là?) Victoria is fluent in French, Spanish, and English, and David is fluent in English and Spanish (his French is nothing to é ternuer  at either). As a result, there are a lot of languages flying around the house, and that has a major impact on our writing as well.  But really, when we talk about multilingualism, we're talking about multiculturalism. Since we're both the product of different cultures, we've been blessed with a broad perspective of people. That background combined with multiple languages unlocks more perspectives and styles of writing for us.  We've infused that into all of our novels.  For example, in our first novel, The Gift of the Twin Houses, our main character Sarah has a Spanish mother, Mexican father, and French g

Behind the Pen Name: Meet the Dynamic Duo--VD Povall

Hello Readers, We thought this week would be a good time to share a little more information about ourselves.  Our pen name is V. & D. Povall, and we also go by "2authors". The "V" stands for Victoria, and the "D" stands for David. We're a married couple who have always loved writing together and began to publish novels recently. We'd been pursuing and practicing writing and the arts our whole lives. David grew up speaking Spanish and English together, living for years in Mexico. He traveled all over the country and even picked up the Aztec language of Nahuatl. He's been in countless films, television shows, and commercials dating back to his teenage years--in both Spanish and English. He's written poetry, short stories, screenplays, and now with V, five novels. He was even nominated for the Mexican equivalent of an Oscar! Victoria grew up speaking French, Spanish, and English. She was born in Mexico and grew up surrounded by artists and

A Sneak-Peek at Our Next Novel

Hello there readers! We're getting closer to publishing our next novel and decided it was time to share a little bit about the title, the story, and the main character.  Are you ready? Here goes... Our next novel will be called, "An Educated Death".  We're venturing into a new genre--murder mystery. We were inspired by (and have always loved) the Travis McGee novels. The 21-book series by John D. Macdonald debuted in 1964 with "The Deep Blue Good-by", featuring a hard-boiled detective who lives on a houseboat that he won in a poker game. He's a beach bum that'll help you find whatever it is you're looking for, as long as he can have half.   Our idea was to develop a character who had given up on life due to a personal tragedy but starts caring again after getting sucked into a web of corruption, fraud, and murder. When a dead body washes up and someone he loves is threatened, world-weary Justin Pierce, a special agent working for the Department o

From Mystery to Romance to Space Opera: Genre-Hopping and the Ties that Bind

Image
Hello All,  If you're familiar with our work, you'll know the first novels we published formed a series called "The Perils of a Reluctant Psychic" Those three books (The Gift of the Twin Houses, Secrets of Innocence, and Jackal in the Mirror) fall into the romance, mystery, and paranormal genres of fiction. Our most recent book (Ascension: Kelahya Unbound) is a space opera. What's it like writing in completely different genres? Do we change the style, or how we write? Is there something that links our stories together regardless of genre? We're so glad you asked.  :) The styles of the novels are quite different. In "The Perils of a Reluctant Psychic" series, we wrote with a gentle rhythm that follows the heroine's journey as she comes to terms with her paranormal abilities, and interacts with ghosts, who share their own story with her in their own style.  Ascension, on the other hand, utilized a fast, aggressive rhythm due to the heroine's ru

Ascension: Kelahya Unbound -- Surveying the Reviews

Hello readers, It's August if you can believe it. Pumpkin spice season is just around the corner. We're hard at work finishing the edits for our next novel but felt we should pop in and say hello--and share some reviews from Ascension, Kelahya Unbound. We don't like to brag, but we wanted to post a few of the responses our readers have shared with us (we're omitting the ones from family 😁).  You can always head over to  https://2authors.com/  to get more info on our novels and order a copy (or three).  If you're a lover of science fiction definitely give our novel Ascension a look.  Here's what some kind strangers had to say about it: " Kelahya Unbound is a well-told story of a woman traumatized by her past and her quest to fulfill her destiny. There is not a single dull moment in the book, and my eyes were glued to the pages until the end. The non-linear structure of the plot makes the narrative all the more compelling as the Povalls slowly assemble the p
