3 Things We Wish We Had Known...

Image
Hello Readers! It's mid-May! We hope everyone had a splendid Mother's Day. Ours was quiet and restful. Summer is just around the corner.  Are you planning on traveling for Memorial Day? Why do you hate yourself? :)  This week we did some reflecting and came up with three things we wish we had known at the beginning of our novel writing journey. We thought we'd share them in the hopes that it may save future writers from avoidable stress and aggravation, or at least mentally prepare them for it. Looks like fun, doesn't it? Ready? Here we go. Three things we wish we knew about writing novels before we started I.  Working with publishers and literary agents requires a vigilant eye We would have avoided a lot of disappointment and surprise if we had known that things are not always what they appear to be when meeting and interacting with potential publishers and agents. For example, we met with multiple publishers about our first book and were excited at the rave reviews an

Hail bounteous May!

Among the changing months, May stands confessed The sweetest, and in fairest colors dressed! -James Thomson Hello Readers! Welcome to May! We hope you all danced around the Maypole this week, and engaged in your favorite fertility ritual.  Before we jump into our topic for today's blog, let's talk about May for a quick minute.  We don't know for sure where the name May comes from. The leading contenders are the Roman Goddess Maia, who was the Goddess of plant growth (kind of a weird thing to be a deity for, but, go off Queen), and the Latin word maiores, which means elders. Interestingly enough (at least to us), there is a Greek Goddess Maia as well. She's the mother of Hermes and Goddess of fertility.  Don't forget about Mother's Day, May 12th. If you're lucky enough to still have your momma around, make a plan now! Also, May 8th is Root Canal Appreciation Day, so, you know, plan accordingly. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, Women's Health Care Mon

WHEW! That was a lot...

Hello Readers! Well, things have settled down finally. We're back home after a whirlwind weekend at the LA Times Festival of Books. You could say it was...one for the books. We needed multiple days to recover. Not pictured: THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE! There were people everywhere! Over 159,000! Live music across multiple stages kept everything lively and loud. Our booth was on the main thoroughfare near the entrance, so we were constantly seeing scores of people coming hither and yon. Our neighbor booth was a children's author with a wonderful pop-up book about rock and roll legends getting lots of well-deserved attention. And then Blippi decided to do a photo op next to our booth too! He's a rock star to the under-6 crowd. We got nervous. Blippi was rolling with security! These splendid people were our first customers of the festival We were also lucky enough to be next to the poetry stage, and during slower times we were able to pop over and hear some beautiful recitations.  We

April cold with dripping rain...

April cold with dripping rain Willows and lilacs brings again, The whistle of returning birds, And trumpet-lowing of the herds. -Ralph Waldo Emerson Hello Readers! We're in the middle of a super busy April. Between the book launch and getting ready for the LA Times Festival of Books, we've got our hands full.  Early reviews of the book have been positive so far, which we are grateful for! If any big reviews come out, we'll be sure and share. Did you know April got its name from the Latin word aperio , which means 'to open' (as in a budding plant)? Fitting its name comes from Latin because the founding of Rome took place in April. (We've got tons of fun facts for ya!) This is when spring should spring, and here in SoCal, we've gotten lots of April showers, which means the May flowers should be outstanding.  These are flowers. Still to come this month is Passover, Earth Day, Arbor Day, and National Sense of Smell Day (?!). And of course we're only nine day

Who knows, maybe by the end of the year we'll be on the list!  In no particular order, here are three mystery novels we recommend that are rising up the charts in 2024.  The Fury by Alex Michaelides Former movie star Lana Farrar has become a bit of a recluse even though she's one of the most famous people in the world. Every year for Easter she invites some close friends to vacation on her private island off the coast of Greece. But these old friendships conceal resentment, hatred, and a desire for revenge. This time, the resentments explode and result in murder. What follows is a classic style locked-room mystery, with plenty of cat-and-mouse play and e
