A Happy and Bright Toyotathon to You All...

Image
"The wind blows cold and dreary,     across the whitened plain; And we see the oaks with their branches bare, Through the frost on the windowpane."  - From December by Joseph D. Herron Hello Readers! Welcome to December. The end of the year, already? Time flies and all that... Happy Toyotathon to all who celebrate! We're a proud Toyota family, and each year Toyotathon brings gladness and joy to our hearts.  You can finance for as low as 1.99?!?! Nothing new to report from our homestead in SoCal. We're cozy and snug, planning 2025 as best we can. Hope to have some announcements about future projects for you soon.  For our penultimate blog of the year, we're going to explore December in all her glory, with fun facts and whatnot. Ready? Let's jump in. Fun Facts About December December sounds like it's referencing the number 10, doesn't it? Well, it is. That's because December used to be the tenth month of the year, back in the days of the Roman calend...

November Salmagundi

November Besides the autumn poets sing,  A few prosaic days A little this side of the snow And that side of the haze. A few incisive mornings, A few ascetic eyes,-- Gone Mr. Bryant's golden-rod, And Mr. Thomson's sheaves. Still is the bustle of the brook, Sealed are the spicy valves; Mesmeric fingers softly touch The eyes of many elves. Perhaps a squirrel may remain, My sentiments to share. Grant me, O Lord, a sunny mind, Thy windy will to bear! -Emily Dickinson (That poem feels appropriate) (Also, we recommend reading the poem aloud if you can when you see it. It makes it more powerful.) Hello readers! We sincerely hope you're all hanging in there. We're doing ok here in SoCal. Not much to report on the writing front. We'll share an update as soon as we can about our next project.  As winter works its way in, and things feel colder and darker (perhaps both literally and metaphorically), we are jumping in with a little mishmash blog of bits and bobs. The plan is to ...

"I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers" -Lucy Maud, Anne of Green Gables

October turned my maple's leaves to gold; The most are gone now; here and there one lingers: Soon these will slip from out the twig's weak hold, Like coins between a dying miser's fingers. -Thomas Bailey Aldrich Hello Readers! Write On, Oceanside! was a blast. This last weekend we got to connect with local authors and readers, sell some books, and attend a fantastic panel led by Matt Coyle (author of the bestselling Rick Cahill crime series) on creating a series protagonist. We were able to take away some valuable tips for developing our main characters into people you'd want to stay with over multiple books. That, plus the live music and poetry readings made it a whole lot of fun. We'll be sure and let you know when the next fair or live event comes up. It's always a delight meeting readers and signing books for folks. The calm before the storm at Write On, Oceanside! We've entered spooky season (are you ready for some fun facts??).  Let's talk about Oc...

An Interview with Special Agent Justin Pierce

Image
Hello Readers! September is half-over! Football has started! Pumpkin Spice Lattes are in bloom!  Fall is here.  Things are going swimmingly over here in SoCal. We're on the other side of the heat wave, and if the earthquakes would just relax a bit, things would be perfect.  Today's blog is a bit different from anything we've done before. We've got a special treat for you; we were able to land an interview with the protagonist of our latest novel, An Educated Death . That's right, Special Agent Justin Pierce has agreed to sit down and answer some of our questions.  Below is the transcript of our (fictional) conversation. Please enjoy!                                                               Interview with Justin Pierce No pictures of Justin Pierce could be found Q: Really appreciat...

Summer was our best season: it was sleeping on the back screened porch in cots, or trying to sleep in the treehouse; summer was everything good to eat; it was a thousand colors in a parched landscape... -Harper Lee  Hello readers! August is drawing to a close, September is upon us. Kids are back in school. Life rolls along.  All is well with us. The end of summer continues to be quiet and calm, just as we like it.  Where's my hammock? However, things will be picking up in the fall. We've been asked to participate in another literary festival--not quite as huge as the LA Times Festival of Books, but it's still pretty substantial. It's called "Write On, Oceanside!" and takes place in, you guessed it, Oceanside, CA. This year Write On, Oceanside happens on October 5th.  The festival is hosted by the Oceanside Cultural Arts Association (OCAA) and Oceanside Public Library, with the goal of celebrating and inspiring local authors. It has grown into one of the larges...

Olympic Fever, and Fun Facts About August

Image
"The quiet August noon has come;      A slumberous silence fills the sky;  The winds are still, the trees are dumb,  In glassy sleep the waters lie." -William Cullen Bryant Hello Readers! Welcome to August! The Olympics have been a blast so far, hope you're enjoying them as much as we are. We've contracted a case of Olympic fever, and it's not from swimming in the Seine.  Opening ceremonies did not disappoint.  Whether you're a dressage person or a trampoline enthusiast, there's been something for everyone at these games. We've especially enjoyed cheering on Simon Biles, the GOAT. The Olympics end Sunday, so if you've been missing out, there's still plenty of track and field, basketball, and synchronized swimming to enjoy. Not much new with us as summer rolls on. We're still enjoying the release of 'An Educated Death'. If you haven't checked it out yet, please do. Here's a link to view and/or order the book.  link As has b...

A Wonderful 'Remembrance: Selected Correspondence of Ray Bradbury'

Image
Hello Readers! We're back after a couple weeks off.  We spent it reading, of course.  David had a birthday in late June, and he received a special gift that he's spent the last few weeks reading and relishing, so we decided to tell you all about it. It's a book called "Remembrance: Selected Correspondence of Ray Bradbury".  Well worth your time. It contains personal letters and communications Ray sent and received across decades of his life, with many fascinating and admirable people on the other end, including Gore Vidal, Bertrand Russell, Anaïs Nin, Sir Arthur C. Clarke, and many more.  This book felt very personal for David. He first encountered Bradbury's 'The Martian Chronicles' as a teenager. Maybe it was the parallel universe kind of story with juxtapositions of time and beings, or the poetic and profound way in which he describes characters, places, feelings, and fantasies, but the story deeply resonated with him. When he rereads Bradbury now, ...
